Goodbye to Taku Lodge

Taku Lodge new dogsled
This is a dog sled, obviously new or just for show.  There was a really old one inside the lodge ~ hanging from the ceiling and it took me a long time to figure out what it was.  In the early days, Mary Joyce was housekeeper in the Lodge.  She received an invitation to participate in the 1936 Fairbanks Ice Carnival and decided to make the trip overland by dog sled.  She set out with 5 dogs and a loaded sled to travel 1,000 miles over three months!  She averaged 20 miles a day in spite of temperatures to 50 degrees below zero and only a few hours of daylight each day.  The sled hanging in the lodge is the sled she used.
