Juneau, Alaska ~ float plane

Taku ~ float plane to take us
Stampin' Up! has several planned activities for us on cruise but, most of the time, we are on vacation ~ just enjoying Alaska.  In Juneau, Alan and I decided to take a 'float plane adventure' and it was so exciting.  The plane flew us over glaciers and the Taku River to the Taku Lodge for a dinner that included grilled fresh salmon ~ yummmmm!

Taku ~ our pilot
The float plan held eight people.  I was in the second seat back and this is our pilot; he had been flying for 30+ years.  A float plane is so smooth ~ I was amazed at the takeoff and the landing.

Taku ~ Glacier

Taku ~ Glacier Blue Ice
The deep blue (looks like little scraps of Pacific Point card stock to me) is the part of the ice on the glacier that is the most dense.  Alan has explained it to me several times.  Here's what Wikipedia says ~ Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of a glacier that winds its way toward a body of water.  During its travels, air bubbles that are trapped in the ice are squeezed out, and the size of the ice crystals increases, making it clear.  You never know what you are going to learn on this blog, right?  More Taku River tomorrow ~ stay tuned!
