Ketchikan and Crabs

George Inlet Lodge ~ big crab
I think all of us on the East Coast have been crabbing but there were a number of folks on our tour who had not had a close encounter with a crab.  Our boat took us to a special part of the lake where our guide, below, lifted crab pots out of the water to give everyone a close up view.

George Inlet Lodge ~ crabs
She talked about the life cycle of the Dungeness crab and told us the difference in appearance between the male and female.  The bottom of the shell markings on the males resemble the Washington Monument and the females the Capitol Dome ~ hadn't heard that before!

George Inlet Lodge ~ Phyllis ~ crab
We got to pass the crabs around to get a really close look.  Here's my friend, Phyllis, holding the crab just right!!!  The crabs were returned to the water and released as they were part of a research project ~ not lunch.

George Inlet Lodge ~ lodge
Our next stop was the Lodge where lunch was served ~ a lovely green salad AND all the crabs you could eat!  YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
